Shocking Truth about RV Electrical

Problems with RV Electrical:

RV Electrical is often misunderstood.  While most RVers know the importance of having a good surge protector and guarding against RV power spikes, you’d be shocked (Especially RV Newbies) to find out what could cost more money & do more damage by silently destroying your system, appliances & electronics!

If we haven’t already met: We’re John & Mercedes, the RV Odd Couple. We sold our house & most of our possessions to RV pursuing freedom, independence, and adventure because life is too short!  The following article is our personal experience.  We are not safety professionals.  There are affiliate links in this post. This means if you purchase and use our links, it will not cost you a penny more, but we will earn a small commission. Thank you in advance as these help us offset the costs of the blog and creating the video.

We are not RV Electric Experts.  John has a healthy fear of electricity.  Both because he saw someone get electrocuted as a young man, and later in life (after some beer & encouragement) he peed on an electric fence.  So this is a very basic article about RV Electricity.

We rely heavily on the RV Odd Squad, (Our family on the road) for advice on how to RV. When master electricians, electrical engineers, and other electrically inclined RV Odd Squad members keep recommending the same product, we take notice.

So when RV Odd Squad kept telling us about the Hughes Autoformer, we decided to reach out to them and check out their product. They were kind enough to let us try out their system and offer RV Odd Squad a Coupon Code to SAVE 10% “rvoddcouple10”. You can check them out here.

Shocking Truth about RV Electrical:

While most people know that you need to have surge protector, (to protect from spikes in electricity that can damage your wiring), most RVers don’t know that Low Voltage in your RV is just as dangerous of an issue.

You see, it’s just like the summer power outages in NY & CA.  They’re not shutting power because of the heat.  They’re loosing power because all of the AC units are pulling too hard on the system.

When your RV isn’t getting enough power, it starves your appliances and electronics, thereby making the appliances work harder and heating up the lines.  Some say this is more dangerous because it slowly and silently starves the electrical system

With the boom in RVers hitting the road we have more RV’s using this antiquated electrical systems.  We also have more electrical widgets, gadgets, and gadgets on our RV’s than ever before.  So we don’t just have more people using RV Electricity, we have a greater need for RV power than ever before!

What’s so Special about the WatchDog?

The PWD EPO will shut off power if the volts fall to 104v or lower or if the volts spike to 132v or higher.   So let’s start with their Surge Protector and what makes the Hughes Watch Dog different.

The first thing that makes this RV surge protector unique is that it comes with a replaceable surge protection module.  This is essentially the last surge protector you will ever need to buy!  When most surge protectors protect from a spike, they break in the process, becoming trash.  With the replaceable module, you can just replace the module, instead of replacing the entire system.  This is better for the environment and your pocketbook!

On top of that,  Hughes Autoformers will send one free replacement module out within the first 2 years upon purchase if the module is used up. It is like having a surge protector with 9 lives, but in this case you can keep replacing that board.  Our only regret is that we wish we had known about this when we shared our Newbie Glamping Must Haves.  You can check that out here.

The other nice thing about the Hughes Power Watchdog is that it is the only surge protector that comes with an app that will alert you if there is an issue. You can see your incoming voltage, amp draw in real time, and if there is an issue, the app will detail the problem.  Their app works on both Apple & Android.

The other thing we like about the surge protector is the ease of use. It it’s red, there’s a problem. If the watch dog shines white, the RV electrical hookup is good to go.  This is RV Electrical for Dummies!  🙂

But what we like most about the RV Watchdog is the price. And if you want an even better price, use coupon code RVOddCouple10 for 10% off!

If you don’t already know, a surge protector takes the brunt force of an electrical spike or surge. Without these, that surge could do a lot of damage to electronics and equipment in the RV. The cost to repair (AC units, TVs, microwaves, laptops, circuit boards and more) outweighs the costs of a surge protector. Aside from the potential costs of a surge, there’s also the time and stress of having your RV in a shop to consider!

Next we’re going totally about the Hughes Autoformer.  The Autoformer is like having your own mini power station.

You might think it’s a little excessive but if you can afford it, this device will not only save you from low voltage, it will help your RV’s electronics operate up to 25% better by converting AMPS into Volts.  The Hughes Autoformer will boost voltage 10% at 113v or lower.

Don’t take our word for it, see below:
